Women from Istanbul Feminist Kolektif filed a criminal complaint against the prosecutor who did not issue protection order for Arzu Yıldırım, even though she had filed a criminal complaint two days before she was murdered in the street.
The members of the Kolektif who run the campaign We revolt against the women killings! issued a press statement before they filed the criminal complaint against the Ümraniye Public Prosecutor Feridun Kabadayı. In their press statement, the members emphasised the responsibility of the prosecutors in preventing those murders.
In the press statement, it was also emphasised that the government, judiciary and the prosecution office should take immediate measures in order to prevent women killings:
“The number of available women’s shelters are still far away from being enough. The murderers of women continue to get reduced sentences for unjust provocation; there are no new legal arrangements, no special measures. Even the existing laws are not being implemented. Moreover, the prosecution office cannot even protect the women who demand protection! We demand immediate action, measures to be taken; we demand the government, judiciary and prosecution offices to fulfil their obligations.”
Some of the writings on the placards that women held were “Arzu Yıldırım should not have died. People who are responsible for her murder must be brought to justice.”, “We do not want to go to death from the door of the prosecution office.”, “We don’t want to die with criminal injustices in our bags, we want protection.”, “Long live women’s solidarity.” The women filed their criminal complaint to Ümraniye Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office via their attorney Meriç Eyüboğlu.
